We are dedicated to Saving Horses that are slaughter bound, Abused, Neglected & Surrendered to offer a second chance at life ! We are committed to Raising Awareness and being the horses voice in issues such as : * Horse Slaughter for Human Consumption :
On June 2010 Agricultural Minister granted approval to a western Australian butcher to sell horse meat for human consumption. From Europe to South America to Asia the top 8 countries consuming approx 4.7 Million Horses a year. The racing industry turns a blind eye on whats happening to the horses, the industry needs to be regulated to stop the "backyard" breeding mentality of horse studs. But nothing will be done ! Why ? The almighty $ millions of $'s the racing industry generates every year.
* Wastage in the Thoroughbred & Standardbred Racing Industries :
Australia remains one of the largest racing nations in the world, not only does the nation have the highest per capita ownership of Thoroughbred horses, it is also the place of birth for 17% of the worlds Thoroughbred foals. The unwanted, Rejected & "failed" ( race) Horses most, and we are referring to millions, are sent to the knackery for glue, petfood & Fertilizer, Very few find a good home, though supply & demand are sent to korea, usa, japan and other countries where racing "standards" are lower, but they will almost certainly be killed long before their natural life is over. Horses Relinquished for slaughter in Australia are sent to either an Abbattoir or Knackery. These two types of establishments differ fundamentally in that an abbattoir is licensed to export horsemeat overseas for human consumption and more recently within Australia, namely W.A. While a knackery sells it's produce for pet food and other saleable by-products such as Horse hides, hair, meat and bone meal. There are 2 licensed abattoirs in Australia : : Meramist @ Caboolture QLD AND : Metro Meats @ Peterborough S.A With 33 Licensed Knackeries within Australia.
* Pet Food Companies that do not sell horse meat in their products :
Through awareness & knowledge and demand that pet food companies display ingredients on their packaging, then they will be giving their customers the option to purchase their products.
* Demand Better Conditions AND RSPCA inspections in Livestock Saleyards Australia Wide :
If you or anyone else you know attends a saleyard auction and the conditions are unfavourable, such as dirty water or no water at all, the horse is sick and looks visibly unwell, PLEASE let the auctioneer or Admin Office Know, as these horses should NOT be sold in saleyards...You must speak up and be the Horses voice , because they can not speak up for themselves, & you could potentially make a difference for the next shipment of horses coming in for the next auction. If you are thinking about buying / Rescuing a horse from a saleyard, please take someone with you to help you make the right decision. I have been to many horse sales and most horses up for auction have one issue or another, most of these horses need to be rehabilitated, and worked with either physically or emotionally and most often then not both and it is not a short term project, which requires Time, patience, knowledge & money, just to name a few. Please remember you are buying a closed book you have no idea of its contents, and all these horses are sold as is with no refunds.
* Ban Jumps Racing :
For decades jumps racing has created a major horse welfare concern, due to the cruel nature of the sport which involves horses falling & suffering severe injuries resulting in death statistics. The death of clearview bay further contributes to the damning statistics that for every 24 horses that have commenced a jumps race this year, one has died ! There have also already been 22 falls in jumps races this season. Approximately one fall per four races run. In the brand annual steeple race in which clearview bay fell & died, only 8 horses finished from the 14 that commenced the race. Measures introduced after inquiries in 2002, 2005 and 2008 have not made the "sport" so far for jumps horses The protests and debates continue to this day......................
* Premarin-HRT:
Thousands of Mares are put in foal year after year so that their urine can be collected in sacks that are attached to them for the vital ingredient in premarin which is estrogen ! some 90,000 horses & foals are killed as a result of premarin farms every year. These Mares are tied up in stalls unable to lie down (and YES horses do need to lie down, some sleep stages are done standing others lying for full rest, a horse must lie down ) they get no exercise, have reduced water consumption ( makes the mares urine more concentrated ) for six months. This leaves them unhealthy, covered with sores and with infections & drastically shortens their lives.They are taken off line to give birth and in some cases the foal is weaned dangerously early ( if allowed to nurse at all ) so the Mare can be brought back into season, and bred again. The average life span of a PMU farm Mare is 8-9 years, compared to 20-30 (sometimes more ) that is more typical of a horse. And at the end of production the Mares are sent to Slaughter as well, often with their last foal at their side.
* Save The Brumbies They are our Heritage :
We DO support the Belief these horses are valuable and should NOT be considered as pests, We do Support the Cause to SAVE THE BRUMBY ! Thousands of Brumbies are killed every year un humanely, the photos that circulated in the media a few years ago of hundreds of our brumbies, stallions Mares and foals and mares in foal, running to try save their lives, but they had no hope with the looming helicopter above shooting out thousands of bullets each round continuously, the brumbies were shot and killed but some were not ! some were shot in the legs, neck rear ends they were not killed they were left there to die in agonizing pain ! There should be a system in place similar to what is going through legislation now, where the Brumbies are handed over to professional handlers & are vet checked, stallions gelded, all wormed and trained, then to be placed & adopted to approved Australian homes. They are our past present & future we need to protect them !
